Avid sportsman

Afzal Bajwa (or Baray Abu as we lovingly called him) was an avid sportsman. A tennis and badminton champion himself, in my youth I remember him encouraging all the children towards sports: from the backyard pool in the Gulberg house to the summer afternoons of tennis, badminton and cricket in the lawn. He would follow and could engage in conversation on any sport: football, hockey, cricket, tennis, badminton. During the 1990 football world cup when the matches used to be start late during the night, he used to ask me to write down the results for him because he could not wait from the time he woke up at Fajr until the newspaper came to find out the results. (This of course was before the time of 24/7 news channels like Geo and Dawn!) He would recount stories of the glory days of Pakistan in field hockey in the seventies (when they finished in the top 4 in all the world cups of the decade, winning 3 times) and how they would listen to the commentary on the radio. He would become animated at the mention of a sports topic and would keenly give his opinions and predictions. Even the last time I saw him, he was watching the 2008 tennis Australian Open, with a smile on his face.
